Tom was also the Head Coach of the Junior Men's team during the last cycle from 2005 to 2008, leading Canada to a Silver medal at the ISF VIII Junior Men's World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon. Tom will handle the Junior Men's National Team Head Coaching duties until the conclusion of the 2012 ISF IX Junior Men's World Championship, which will take place in Argentina. It will mark the first time this particular event will be played in South America. 'I am both honoured by being selected as the Junior Men's National Team Head Coach for the 2012 ISF World Championships in Argentina and extremely excited for the opportunity to lead Canada's top 19-and-under male softball players in such a high performance competitive setting' stated Tom Doucette. Tom brings a wealth of experience to the Junior Men's National Team program, having served the team in various capacities since 2001. He previously coached Team Nova Scotia at four Canada Games (Boys - 1989, 1993 and 1997; Girls - 2001), as well as several Junior, Intermediate and Senior Men's teams between 1980 and 1992. 'Tom has an easygoing personality combined with a never-ending desire to teach young athletes, which is highly effective with our Junior Men's National Team. I look forward to our continued success under Tom's leadership. It is great to have him back at the helm!' The Junior Men's National Team won a Silver medal at the 2008 ISF Junior Men's World Championship held in Whitehorse, Yukon, narrowly losing 2-1 to Australia in an extra inning in the Gold medal game. 'The next immediate task is to put the rest of the coaching and administrative staff in place for collaborative planning' added Doucette. 'The 2010 softball season will be one of scouting and report gathering and a beginning of networking with the 'at age' coaches. Highlights of the scouting will be the Canadian Midget Championship and the Eastern and Western Bantam 'A' events.' -SC- For more information, please contact: Gilles LeBlanc Manager - Marketing and Communications Softball Canada (613) 523-3386 ext. 3105 gleblanc@softball.ca
| Softball Canada - CANpitch Program Launch | |
| CANpitch Program Launch
Wednesday, February 03, 2010 (Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is extremely pleased to announce the launch of its new national pitching program, which will be known as the CANpitch Program. From numerous discussions, it was determined that pitching was a key area in need of coaching resources. Thus, Softball Canada put together a group of internationally acclaimed pitchers to discuss this area of the game, with the goal of developing a standardized pitching curriculum based on Softball Canada’s Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) Model, to be used across the country. The program was created by Mark Smith (current Senior Women’s National Team Head Coach and former National Team pitcher), Deb Sonnenberg (1996 Olympian and former Senior Women’s National Team pitcher), Rob Guenter (former Senior Men’s National Team pitcher), and Kaila Holtz (2004 Olympian and former Senior Women’s National Team pitcher) as well as feedback from Glen Jevne (former Senior Men’s National Team pitcher) and Russell Cooper (a New Zealand pitching expert and former pitching coach at St. Louis University currently instructing in the United States). This group identified key drills that teach the fundamental skills of pitching and reinforce the proper mechanics. Using these drills, a set of three 6-week curriculums were created which includes group lessons for the FUNdamentals (ages 8-9), Learning to Train (ages 10-12) and Training to Train (ages 13-16) LTPD stages. The CANpitch Program will be available to all athletes between 8-16 years old who want to learn or improve the fundamental skills of windmill pitching. With this curriculum and the help of the softball community, Softball Canada hopes to expose more young athletes to pitching, develop fundamentally sound pitchers and, over time, improve the level of softball competition across Canada. “After discussions with other Softball bodies in North America and as President of Softball Canada, I felt there was a real need for a standardized pitching program in Canada” stated Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn. To help deliver the program across the country, Softball Canada has put together a revolutionary team of Master and Regional Pitching Instructors, who will cover each region of a province or territory to ensure quality pitching instruction is offered at the local level. Instructors include former National Team pitchers, former and current elite level pitchers, as well as youth softball coaching experts. Once appointed, every instructor will receive ongoing training to become experts in every aspect of working with pitchers. In addition, Softball Canada is finalizing a CANpitch DVD that will assist coaches and pitchers in understanding the key teaching points for the drills in the curriculum. The DVD will be available for sale at the end of February. The CANpitch Program will be available to all athletes between 8-16 years old who want to learn or improve the fundamental skills of windmill pitching. Contact your Provincial or Territorial office to learn more about the CANpitch Program in your area. “Pitching is the lifeblood of the sport of softball” said Mark Smith. “The CANpitch Program provides a fun, safe, and developmentally appropriate method to teach the fundamentals skills of pitching. Our CANpitch Committee consulted with pitching experts from throughout Canada and the world and volunteered an incredible amount of time and energy to create this exciting program. Our Provincial/Territorial Associations have been an important partner in providing the financial resources to create the program and in identifying quality instructors to deliver this important new initiative. The CANpitch Program is the first step towards developing quality pitching talent throughout Canada for many years to come.” “This is a phenomenal accomplishment for Softball Canada, its Master Pitching Instructors and the Provinces and Territories” added Kevin Quinn. “This is a leading edge program which will assist Softball Canada in the development of top level pitchers for future world competitions. I am extremely proud of our CANpitch Committee, Master Pitching Instructors and our provincial/territorial representatives who have worked together to make this program a reality. This is a great day in Canadian Softball.” For more information about the CANpitch program, please visit Softball Canada’s website at www.softball.ca, or contact your local provincial or territorial softball office. | Team Canada Announces National Men's Team Head Coach
| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14th, 2009 Don Bates Named Head Coach of Men’s National Softball Team (Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is very pleased to announce that Don Bates (Saskatoon, SK) has been chosen as the Head Coach of the Men’s National Team program. Don was an assistant coach with the Men’s program since 2006, and also served as an assistant coach with the Senior Women’s Olympic Team in 2008. Bates will replace Mark Smith (Falmouth, NS), who stepped down earlier this year to take on the Head Coach position of the Women’s National Team program. “I am honored to assume the position of Head Coach of the Canadian Men's National Softball Team” stated Don Bates. “The program has a rich tradition of being one of the best in the world. I look forward to working with Canada's top male softball athletes as we begin our initial preparation for the 2013 ISF World Championship in New Zealand.” A Level III coach working towards obtaining his Level IV certification, Don has also helped Softball Canada on the administrative side of the game. He has been a member of the Long Term Athlete Development Steering Committee, and just recently accepted to chair the committee at the 2009 Annual General Meeting held in Ottawa. A retired school principal who now runs Saskatchewan’s first High School Softball Academy, Don will devote most of his time to promote and teach the sport of softball. “It will be a real pleasure to have Don Bates on board as the Head Coach of our Senior Men's National Team program” said Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn. “Don is highly respected in the softball community for both his softball expertise and his ability to work cooperatively. Don has great technical knowledge, especially in the pitching area, and will be a real asset in developing young athletes as we start our rebuilding process. I am extremely pleased that Don has accepted the challenge and look forward to working with him in the future.” The Senior Men’s National Team recently won a Bronze medal at the 2009 ISF Men’s World Championship held in Saskatoon, and is always considered a Gold medal threat. “With a number of our current National Team players retiring from competitive play, one priority over the next two years will be to identify our top young players who appear ready to make the transition to International competition” assessed Bates. “These players will need to be exposed to top International competition to gain the experience required for success at the ISF World Championship. I look forward to working closely with the Provincial/Territorial associations as we begin the process of identifying and developing our National Team roster players.” -SC- For more information, please contact: Gilles LeBlanc Manager – Marketing and Communications Softball Canada (613) 523-3386 ext. 3105 gleblanc@softball.ca
